In Part 1 we asked whether the infant actually had the virus at all. In Part 2 we considered the mother's lack of prenatal care and the fact that she fell out of HIV care. In this issue the series' writer, Rod McCullom, examines the role that Mississippi's politics and policies play in driving the HIV rates in the Magnolia State, where the baby was born.

New USPSTF HIV Testing Recommendation Paves the Way for Increased Testing and Timely HIV Diagnosis in the U.S.

This week, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released a new Recommendation Statement on screening for HIV, giving a “Grade A” recommendation for routine HIV screening for all people aged 15 to 65, as well as younger adolescents and older adults who are at an increased risk for HIV infection. It also gave a “Grade A” recommendation for HIV screening for all pregnant women, including those in labor whose HIV status is unknown.
